TBCC ACADEMIC STANDARDS POLICY
The Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy is monitored at the completion of each term of enrollment. The following standards must be met to continue to stay in academic good standing:
Students enrolled for an associate degree, certificate, or diploma must achieve Satisfactory Academic Progress. This means that each term a student must:
· Maintain a cumulative minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) and
· Successfully complete 2/3 of all attempted credits.
The following rules also apply:
· Classes taken for audit will not be considered when determining eligibility.
· Incomplete (I) grades are considered failures to complete unless and until changed to passing grades.
Any individual may be denied admission or continued admission if the appropriate college procedure indicates that the individual cannot benefit from the instruction desired.
SATISFACTORY ACADEMIC PROGRESS PROCEDURES
Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) stages are as follows:
1. Warning - Student’s cumulative GPA drops below 2.0 and/ or student did not complete 2/3 of all attempted credits in one term. Students are strongly encouraged to seek guidance on ways to improve their GPA. Students can enroll in classes while in this stage. A student who is unable to improve their GPA or credit completion status while on Warning will be placed on Academic Suspension.
2. Suspension - Students are not allowed to register until an appeal has been completed and approved. To appeal, a student must complete an appeal packet, which consists of the SAP Appeal Form, an appeal essay, an Academic Plan (Career Education Plan and Learning Contract), and an unofficial transcript. A successful appeal will result in the student being placed on Probation. If the appeal is denied, the student will be provided a date of eligibility for a re-appeal. A student on Suspension cannot take classes until an appeal has been approved by the Appeals Committee.
3. Probation and Probation with Academic Plan - Student must follow the terms of their Academic Plan by successfully completing all attempted credits for the term (earning a C or above). Withdrawals do not count as successful completion. At the end of the term, if the student has successfully completed the terms of their academic plan, they will be placed on Probation with Academic Plan and are required to submit their updated Academic Plan before being allowed to register. A student who does not successfully complete the terms of their Academic Plan will re-enter Suspension (2nd Suspension).
4. Suspension (2nd Suspension) - Students are not allowed to register until an appeal has been completed and approved. To appeal, a student must complete an appeal packet, which consists of the SAP Appeal Form, an appeal essay, an Academic Plan (Career Education Plan and Learning Contract), and an unofficial transcript. In this stage, an appeal interview with the SAP Committee is required. A successful appeal will result in the student being placed on Probation. If the appeal is denied, the student will continue in Suspension and be provided a date of eligibility for a re-appeal in person with the Appeals Committee. A student on Suspension cannot take classes until an appeal has been approved by the Appeals Committee and the VP of Student Affairs.
At any stage, if a student has successfully met SAP Standards, they will return to Good Academic Standing and any registration restrictions will be removed.
